April Fool's 1980

how can you not smile with the Antics to open the last show of a three nighter at the CAPITOL in PASSAIC NJ.... it seems this run took place during the height of the band's friendship with the SNL crew, The Blues Brothers: dan akroyd and john belushi who, reportedly, sang back up on the US BLUES encore on the 30th.... maybe that would explain the moment of levity here.

it seems you had to be in the loop to get tickets to these shows. the theatre only held about 1500. the dead were mostly playing the "small" coliseum circuit by this time (12-20,000 seat places)..... the big time acoustic runs at Winterland and Radio City were not far off. why were they playing these shows? they played a one-off in Oakland on January 13... they were due to kick off their Spring Tour on APRIL 28, in BIrmingham AL...... SO, with their FINAL APPEARANCE on SNL lined up for saturday April 5, they put together a little SUNDAY, MONDAY, TUESDAY run at the good old Capitol Theatre to pass the time.... this all has the air of a private party....

the first set is well played but never really takes off after their joke to open. but they come back and deliver a stellar second set, full of good energy and band interplay. they open with the second ever Stranger.... and encore with Shakedown -- it was a VERY fun set.... along the way they played a great He's Gone. this is a momentous version... they do it just right.... the whole set is an enormously satisfying, warm, good time... all a great vibe.

(OBVIOUSLY, i don't know jack about a late show or an early show.... but i know this concert was pretty damn good. and i am not being a negative creep when i say so :)

the short dialogue between the two guys in the audience at the beginning of He's Gone is priceless. thanks for the story behind this show.

yes... truly... i listened to it last night.... and for got about it, but listened again on the way to work today and i was like, "oh yeah.... these two guys...."

they sound plenty Jersey to me -- just something about the little exchange.... like, do they know each other. because Guy #1 says "now i want a cigarette" seemingly as a response to the beginning of He's Gone, like, "alright, bathroom break"... Guy #2 could be #1's his friend or it could just be someone hearing #1's underlying implication and offers "how bout a joint...?" as a retort..... either way #1 comes back with PURE JERSEY: "i just smoked a joint, Now i want a cigarette...." .... classic AUD stuff, classic East Coast NY/NJ vibe.

Imagine if this was your first show, and/or you didnt really know anything about the GD. You would probably have left about 1 minute into the Promised Land. I've known about this show for years upon years, but havent heard it since today. Hilarious.

Ahhhh. Capitol Theater. Brings back fond memories of the Go Ahead concert in the Fall of 86 or 87.

Mescaline + Passaic + Guidos + IROC's + Hurled Pumpkins = One way ticket to the bummer tent
